J332 is a diagnostic pulmonary function study that measures oxygen saturation via oximetry. The test is performed both at rest and during exercise, or alternatively, during sleep. It can be conducted with or without the administration of supplemental oxygen. This service has both a technical component (H) and a professional component (P) for billing purposes.
When to Use
- Use J332 when performing a six-minute walk test to assess desaturation during exertion, provided the documentation includes the required permanent oximetry record.
- Use J332 for nocturnal oximetry monitoring to evaluate suspected obstructive sleep apnea or nocturnal hypoventilation when a full polysomnography (G430/G431) is not indicated.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J332 in conjunction with an overnight sleep study (G430/G431) will result in an automatic rejection as it is considered bundled.
- Failing to submit the technical component as J332B and the professional component as J332C will lead to payment errors, as these must be claimed separately.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the permanent oximetry record is stored in the patient's chart, as the MOH requires this to substantiate the technical component claim during an audit.

J332 is not eligible for payment unless a permanent record of the study is maintained.
The physician submitting a claim for the technical component is responsible for the complete quality assurance process for all elements of the technical component of the service, including data acquisition, reporting, and record keeping. The physician must be able to demonstrate the above upon request by the MOH.
The physician has the necessary training and experience to personally render the technical component of the service.
J332 has a technical component (H) fee of $17.60 and a professional component (P) fee of $11.35.
