Performs oxygen saturation measurement by oximetry while the patient is at rest, with or without the use of supplemental oxygen (O₂). This fee code represents the technical component (H fee) of the service, valued at $4.20. The professional component (P fee) is not payable. For payment eligibility, a permanent record of the study must be maintained in the patient's chart. When to Use
- Use J323 when assessing a patient with suspected COPD or interstitial lung disease during a routine office visit to document baseline oxygen saturation.
- Use J323 to monitor the efficacy of supplemental oxygen therapy in patients with chronic hypoxemia during a follow-up assessment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J323 on the same day as a comprehensive assessment (e.g., A007) is acceptable, but it will be rejected if billed alongside restricted codes like G570 or G571.
- Failing to retain the actual oximetry printout or a digital record in the EMR constitutes a failure to meet the 'permanent record' requirement, leading to clawbacks during audits.
