S650 – Prostatectomy - simple, by retropubic or suprapubic approach
OHIP Urology Code — MALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
S650 is for a simple retropubic prostatectomy, performed with or without the removal of bladder stones. From : - This procedure includes a vasectomy when one is rendered. - This procedure does not include an investigative cystoscopy. This is a surgical procedure and is eligible for surgeon (A), assistant (B), and anaesthetist (C) fees. The fees for the assistant and anaesthetist are calculated based on a combination of base units and time units. This procedure can be performed laparoscopically, in which case the add-on code E792 is applicable, increasing the surgical fee by 25%.
When to Use
- Use S650 for a simple retropubic or suprapubic prostatectomy, including cases where bladder stones are removed concurrently.
- Use S650 when a vasectomy is performed as part of the procedure, as it is considered bundled into the fee.
- Use S650 in conjunction with the E792 add-on code when the procedure is performed laparoscopically to capture the 25% premium.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill an investigative cystoscopy separately, as it is explicitly excluded from the S650 procedure fee.
- Avoid billing a hospital admission assessment unless it qualifies as the 'major pre-operative visit' where the decision to operate was finalized.
- Ensure the laparoscopic premium E792 is only applied when the procedure is documented as laparoscopic, as incorrect use will trigger an audit.
Billing Tips
- If performing the procedure laparoscopically, ensure E792 is submitted on the same claim as S650 to receive the 25% increase.
- For after-hours or emergency cases, verify that the start time of the procedure aligns with the specific criteria for E409 or E410 to avoid claim rejection.
