When to Use
- Use Z200 when applying an Unna's paste boot for the management of venous stasis ulcers in an office setting.
- Use this code for the application of a compression dressing when the clinical intent is a therapeutic cast-like support, distinct from standard wound care dressings.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z200 if the application occurs within the first 14 days of a fracture or dislocation treatment where a global procedural fee already covers the cast application.
- Claims will be rejected if the service is performed by staff employed by a hospital or Family Health Team, as these are considered facility-funded services.
- Avoid billing Z200 alongside a surgical procedure fee for the same site, as the cast application is considered inclusive of the surgical service.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the clinical record clearly distinguishes the Unna's paste application from routine dressing changes (E584) to justify the Z200 fee.
- When a locum performs the application, you may bill the service under either your own provider number or the absent physician's number, provided the staff performing the delegation are your private employees.
