An examination under anaesthesia (EUA) of the nose, including suction cautery for posterior epistaxis. This procedure is payable whether performed on one side (unilateral) or both sides (bilateral). As a service with a '#' prefix, when performed in a hospital or other approved facility, the premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are funded by the facility's budget (see ). As a Z-code Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), special rules apply to billing assessments on the same day (see ).
When to Use
- Use Z317 when performing a formal examination under anaesthesia specifically to address posterior epistaxis via suction cautery, rather than simple anterior packing.
- Select Z317 instead of R181 or R182 when the procedure requires general anaesthesia or deep sedation in an operating room setting to control posterior bleeding.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z317 alongside a consultation fee on the same day is a common rejection; per SP4, the assessment is included in the IOP fee if performed on the same day.
- Attempting to bill Z317 as bilateral by adding a second unit or modifier will result in rejection, as the code is inclusive of both sides.
