When to Use
- Use Z580 when performing a diagnostic or screening examination of the sigmoid colon using a 60 cm flexible endoscope.
- Use Z580 for flexible sigmoidoscopy procedures; do not use Z535, which is strictly reserved for rigid sigmoidoscopy.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z580 on the same day as a colonoscopy (Z491-Z499 or Z555) will result in a rejection, as these are mutually exclusive.
- Attempting to claim E003C for anaesthesia services with Z580 will be rejected; you must use E032C for anaesthesia coverage.
- Submitting for a flexible sigmoidoscopy using a rigid scope code (Z535) is an audit risk and an incorrect use of the fee schedule.
