Aspiration and irrigation of corpora cavernosa with intracavernosal vasoactive injection for priapism, with or without distal corporoglanular shunt
When to Use
- Use Z786 for the emergency aspiration and irrigation of the corpora cavernosa to treat acute priapism.
- Use this code when performing a distal corporoglanular shunt as part of the initial emergency management of priapism.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill Z786 if a proximal shunt (S565) is performed during the same priapismic episode, as Z786 is considered inclusive to the more invasive procedure.
- Avoid billing a full consultation or assessment on the same day as Z786 if you have already performed the major pre-operative assessment, as this violates the Independent Operative Procedure (IOP) billing rules.
Billing Tips
- Apply the appropriate after-hours premium (E400 or E401) to Z786 if the emergency procedure is performed outside of standard business hours to maximize the claim value.
