Z080Debridement of wound(s) and/or ulcer(s) extending into subcutaneous tissue - one

OHIP Psychiatric Code — INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Debridement of one wound or ulcer extending into subcutaneous tissue. All wound and ulcer debridement services include the application of any necessary dressing if rendered. This service is not payable in addition to any surgical procedure unless complications require such care in excess of the usual post-operative care.

When to Use

  • Use Z080 when performing active debridement of a single wound or ulcer that involves the subcutaneous tissue layer.
  • Choose Z080 over simple dressing changes (which are not separately billable) when the procedure involves the removal of necrotic tissue, slough, or eschar requiring surgical instrumentation.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing Z080 in addition to a surgical procedure code for the same site is a common audit trigger, as it is considered inclusive of post-operative care unless specific complications arise.
  • Submitting Z080 for multiple wounds is a frequent error; if more than one wound is debrided, you must use the appropriate higher-level code (Z081-Z085) rather than billing Z080 multiple times.

Billing Tips

  • If performing this procedure in your office, always append the E542 premium to capture the additional $11.55 for non-hospital settings.
  • Ensure your documentation explicitly describes the depth of the debridement reaching the subcutaneous tissue to justify the use of Z080 over minor integumentary codes.
