This service is for the electrocoagulation of polyps or tumours of the rectum or sigmoid, where the base of the lesion is under 2 cm. The '#' prefix indicates that for services performed in a hospital or Integrated Community Health Services Centre (ICHSC), the premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are funded by the hospital global budget or facility costs respectively. Usage Limit: A maximum of two procedures for polyps or tumours of the rectum or sigmoid (any size or technique, e.g., Z753, Z754, Z785, etc.) are eligible for payment per patient, per day. When to Use
- Use Z753 for the electrocoagulation of a rectal or sigmoid polyp with a base smaller than 2 cm when performed via rigid proctosigmoidoscopy.
- Select Z753 when the procedure is performed as a standalone surgical intervention in an office or clinic setting, provided it does not involve a colonoscope.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z753 for a procedure performed via colonoscope will result in a rejection or audit recovery, as those must be billed using the S19 colonoscopy codes.
- Exceeding the daily limit of two procedures for any combination of rectal/sigmoid polyp codes (e.g., Z753, Z754, Z785) will trigger an automatic rejection for the third claim.
- Attempting to bill Z753 for a lesion with a base of 2 cm or larger is a billing error; Z754 must be used for larger lesions.
Billing Tips
- If performing two distinct procedures on the same day, ensure both are clearly documented as separate lesions to justify the maximum daily limit of two.
- Remember to append the '#' prefix if the procedure is performed in a hospital or ICHSC to correctly account for facility funding.
