E698Oesophagoscopy with pneumatic or balloon dilation

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for pneumatic or balloon dilation performed during an oesophagoscopy-gastroscopy with or without duodenoscopy. It is payable in addition to the primary endoscopic procedure, such as `Z399 (elective) or Z400` (for active bleeding).

When to Use

  • Use E698 when performing therapeutic balloon dilation for achalasia or benign esophageal strictures during an EGD procedure.
  • Apply this code as an add-on to Z399 or Z400 when the dilation is the primary therapeutic intent of the endoscopic session.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing E698 alongside E696 or E695 is often flagged as an audit risk because these codes represent different types of esophageal interventions that are rarely medically necessary in the same session.
  • Failing to include the primary procedure code (Z399 or Z400) on the same claim will result in an automatic rejection, as E698 is strictly an add-on service.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the clinical indication for the dilation is clearly linked to the EGD procedure code to avoid manual review delays.
