E702 – Multiple (3 or more) biopsies of a specific lesion
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This is an add-on fee that can be claimed in addition to the primary endoscopic procedure when multiple biopsies are performed. It is payable with oesophagoscopy-gastroscopy with or without duodenoscopy (Z399, Z400) or with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (Z561, Z558, Z760). The fee applies when three or more biopsies are taken from a specific lesion, as per the description 'with multiple (3 or more) biopsies of specific lesion'.
When to Use
- Use E702 when performing a surveillance gastroscopy (Z399/Z400) where you take three or more biopsies specifically from a single identified lesion, such as a suspected gastric ulcer or mass.
- Apply E702 during an ERCP (Z561/Z558/Z760) when you perform three or more brushings or biopsies of a specific biliary stricture.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not claim E702 if you take fewer than three biopsies from a single lesion, as the code explicitly requires a minimum of three.
- Avoid claiming E702 for random biopsies taken from different areas of the stomach or duodenum, as the code requires the biopsies to be from a 'specific lesion'.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your procedure note explicitly states the number of biopsies taken from the specific lesion to support the claim during a potential audit.
