E681 – Insertion of additional endobiliary prosthesis and/or pancreatic stent

This is an add-on service for the insertion of each additional endobiliary prosthesis and/or pancreatic stent during an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The service is limited to a maximum of 3 additional stents per patient, per procedure. The first stent insertion is claimed using E680.
When to Use
- Use E681 when placing a second or third biliary stent during the same ERCP session where the primary stent was billed under E680.
- Use E681 for the simultaneous placement of a pancreatic stent alongside a biliary stent, provided the initial stent is claimed under E680.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming E681 without a corresponding E680 on the same claim, which will result in an automatic rejection.
- Exceeding the maximum limit of 3 units of E681 per procedure, as any units beyond the third will be rejected by the system.
- Attempting to bill E681 without one of the required base procedure codes (Z561, Z558, or Z760) present on the claim.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the quantity field for E681 accurately reflects the number of additional stents placed (up to 3) to avoid under-billing.
