E662 – Intraductal cytology brushing or intraductal biopsy
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
An additional fee for performing an intraductal cytology brushing or intraductal biopsy during an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). As per the note on page of the Schedule, this code is payable with `Z561 (ERCP with cannulation of common bile duct and/or pancreatic duct), Z558 (ERCP including sphincterotomy and may include removal of one or more bile duct stones), or Z760` (ERCP through gastrojejunostomy following previous Billroth II).
When to Use
- Use E662 when you perform a targeted intraductal cytology brushing during an ERCP to investigate a suspected biliary or pancreatic stricture.
- Use this code when you perform an intraductal biopsy using specialized forceps during an ERCP procedure coded as Z561, Z558, or Z760.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E662 as a standalone procedure will trigger an automatic rejection; it must be submitted on the same claim as the primary ERCP code.
- Attempting to bill E662 for a standard bile duct aspiration or fluid collection that does not involve a formal brushing or biopsy device will lead to audit recovery.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary ERCP code (Z561, Z558, or Z760) is listed first on the claim to establish the procedural context required for the E662 add-on.
