When to Use
- Use S167 for any segmental resection of the colon, such as a sigmoidectomy or right hemicolectomy, where an anastomosis is performed.
- Use S167 when performing a bowel resection that does not fall under more specific site-defined codes like S165 (rectum) or S166 (sigmoid colon), provided the procedure involves resection and anastomosis.
Common Pitfalls
- Failing to append the E793 premium when performing the resection laparoscopically, which results in a significant loss of 25% of the base fee.
- Attempting to bill E718 for a repeat resection when the initial procedure was not one of the specifically listed codes (S217, S213, S214, or S215) or a previous anastomosis, leading to automatic rejection.
