Z324
Z324 – Laryngoscopy - with biopsy or removal of foreign body
OHIP Psychiatric Code — RESPIRATORY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
An indirect endoscopic examination of the larynx, which includes either taking a tissue sample (biopsy) for pathological examination or removing a foreign object. As a 'Z' code, this is classified as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), which has specific rules regarding pre-operative assessments. See payment rules for details.
When to Use
- Use Z324 when performing an indirect laryngoscopy specifically to obtain a tissue biopsy for pathology, distinguishing it from a simple diagnostic examination (Z322).
- Use Z324 when the primary clinical objective is the physical removal of a foreign body from the larynx under indirect visualization.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing Z324 on the same day as a major pre-operative assessment by the same physician will result in the assessment being rejected, as Z324 is an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP).
- Attempting to claim surgical assistance using the 'B' suffix is incorrect; surgical assistance for this procedure must be claimed via M400B with prior authorization and supporting documentation.
Billing Tips
- If a major pre-operative assessment was billed in the previous 12 months for the same condition, you are restricted to billing only a minor or partial assessment on the day of the Z324 procedure.
- Ensure the procedure is clearly documented as an indirect laryngoscopy with biopsy or foreign body removal to justify the IOP fee over standard diagnostic codes like Z322 or Z323.
