- Billing Z331 in addition to a full consultation or assessment on the same day is prohibited; as an Independent Operative Procedure (IOP), only a minor or partial assessment is payable if the major assessment occurred within the previous 12 months.
- Failing to recognize Z331 as an IOP means that if you perform multiple procedures, you must follow the surgical preamble rules regarding pre- and post-operative benefit claims to avoid rejection.
- Confusing Z331 with therapeutic thoracentesis codes (e.g., Z334 or Z335); ensure the documentation clearly supports the diagnostic nature of the aspiration to justify the code selection.
Billing Tips
- If performing Z331 in an emergency department or hospital setting, ensure you append the appropriate Special Visit Premium (Table I or III) if the criteria for an unscheduled visit are met, as these are compatible with IOPs.
