E140 – Cataract extraction and insertion of artificial intraocular lens
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for cataract extraction, all types, by any procedure. The fee for E140 includes the extraction of native lens, insertion of an artificial intraocular lens, and retrobulbar injection when administered by the surgeon.
When to Use
- Use E140 for standard phacoemulsification or extracapsular cataract extraction with the implantation of an artificial intraocular lens.
- Use E140 when the procedure includes the extraction of the native lens and the insertion of the lens, regardless of the specific surgical technique employed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E003C (consultation) for a preoperative cataract assessment unless there is clear medical necessity documented, as this is frequently rejected.
- Do not attempt to bill for a surgical assistant, as E140 has no assigned basic units for assistants in the Schedule of Benefits.
- Do not bill for local infiltration or topical anaesthesia separately, as these are considered included in the procedural fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure anaesthesia services are billed specifically as E023C to correctly capture the 6 basic units assigned to this procedure.
- If the procedure is performed on a patient under 16 years of age, remember to apply the appropriate age premium percentage to the E140 fee.
