E139
E139 – Capsulotomy or primary or subsequent needling
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
A surgical procedure involving an incision into the capsule of the crystalline lens of the eye.
When to Use
- Use E139 for a YAG laser capsulotomy performed to treat posterior capsule opacification following a previous cataract extraction.
- Use E139 for a surgical needling procedure performed to address secondary membranes or capsule remnants in the visual axis.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E139 in conjunction with E003C is strictly prohibited; the claim will be rejected as these are mutually exclusive.
- Attempting to bill for local infiltration or topical anaesthesia as a separate procedure is not eligible for payment and will lead to audit scrutiny.
- Failing to differentiate between a primary capsulotomy and a secondary needling procedure can lead to confusion, though both are captured under this single fee code.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that if anaesthesia services are required beyond local or topical, you reference E023C as the appropriate code for anaesthesia support, as standard time units are not applicable to E139.
