E824 – Bladder biopsy - general anaesthetic
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service code is for a bladder biopsy performed in conjunction with a diagnostic cystoscopy. A key requirement for billing E824 is that the procedure must be conducted under general anaesthetic. As an add-on code, it is intended to be claimed with a primary cystoscopy procedure such as Z606 (Diagnostic with or without urethroscopy) or Z607 (Repeat within 30 days).
When to Use
- Use E824 when performing a bladder biopsy during a diagnostic cystoscopy (Z606 or Z607) specifically under general anaesthetic.
- Use this code for biopsies of suspicious bladder mucosa that are distinct from the excision of bladder tumours (Z632, Z633, or Z634).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E824 alongside Z632, Z633, or Z634 is a common rejection, as the biopsy is considered included in the tumour excision fee.
- Claiming E824 for procedures performed under local anaesthetic or sedation will result in audit recovery, as general anaesthetic is a mandatory requirement for this code.
- Failing to link E824 to a primary cystoscopy code (Z606/Z607) on the same claim will lead to payment rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the anaesthetic type is clearly documented in the operative report to support the claim in the event of a post-payment audit.
- When performing multiple biopsies, bill E824 once as an add-on to the primary cystoscopy; do not attempt to bill it per biopsy site.
