G085 – Continuous venovenous haemofiltration - initial and acute
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Continuous venovenous haemofiltration - initial and acute (for the first 3 services). This service is a form of continuous renal replacement therapy used in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury. Note: As per the Schedule on page , haemodialysis is defined to include haemofiltration and haemoperfusion.
When to Use
- Use G085 for the first three services of continuous venovenous haemofiltration (CVVH) provided to a critically ill patient in an acute care setting.
- Apply this code specifically for the initiation and acute management phases of continuous renal replacement therapy where haemofiltration is the primary modality.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G085 beyond the first three services is a common rejection; subsequent services must be billed under the appropriate maintenance or follow-up codes.
- Failing to distinguish G085 from standard intermittent haemodialysis codes (e.g., G082/G083) can lead to audit scrutiny if the clinical documentation does not support the continuous nature of the procedure.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedure start time is clearly documented to support the application of after-hours premiums (E409, E410, E412, E413) when the service is non-elective.
- When claiming Special Visit Premiums (Table III) in conjunction with G085, ensure the patient status is clearly identified as a hospital in-patient to avoid claim rejection.
