G083 – Continuous venovenous haemodialysis - initial and acute
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Continuous venovenous haemodialysis (CVVHD) is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for the initial and acute phase of treatment. Payment for G083 is limited to the first 3 services. As per the note on page of the Schedule of Benefits, the definition of Haemodialysis also includes haemofiltration and haemoperfusion. This service is eligible for after-hours procedure premiums.
When to Use
- Use G083 for the initiation of continuous venovenous haemodialysis, haemofiltration, or haemoperfusion in the acute setting.
- Apply this code specifically for the first three services provided during the initial acute phase of treatment.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G083 beyond the first 3 services will result in automatic rejection, as the code is strictly limited to the initial acute phase.
- Failing to recognize that G083 encompasses haemofiltration and haemoperfusion leads to duplicate billing errors when these modalities are used interchangeably.
Billing Tips
- Always append the appropriate after-hours procedure premium (E409, E410, E412, or E413) if the procedure commences outside of standard daytime hours to maximize the procedural fee.
- Ensure the procedure is documented as non-elective or an emergency-delayed elective case to satisfy the eligibility requirements for the associated after-hours premiums.
