D001Closed reduction of finger dislocation

OHIP Orthopaedic Surgery Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Closed reduction of a dislocation of a finger joint. This procedure may be billed with E584 for the application of a plaster cast outside of a hospital and E576 for each additional finger dislocation reduced during the same encounter.

When to Use

  • Use D001 for the manual closed reduction of a finger dislocation performed in an office or emergency department setting.
  • Use D001 when a patient presents with a digit dislocation that does not require open surgical intervention or internal fixation.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing D001 for a fracture reduction; fracture reductions must be billed under the appropriate fracture codes (e.g., F-series codes) rather than D001.
  • Attempting to bill E584 (plaster cast application) for a splint or for a cast applied in a hospital setting, both of which are ineligible for this flat fee.
  • Failing to document the specific finger(s) reduced, which leads to rejections when claiming multiple units of E576.

Billing Tips

  • Always append E576 for each additional finger dislocation reduced during the same encounter, as D001 covers only the first digit.
  • If the procedure is performed outside of a hospital, ensure E584 is included on the claim if a plaster cast is applied to stabilize the reduction.
