G541 represents the technical component for two types of advanced EEG studies: 1. Sleep-deprived/induced EEG: This is an EEG recording (with or without video monitoring) performed under one of the following conditions: - After an overnight period of sleep deprivation of greater than 4 hours. - Following the administration of a sedative/hypnotic agent for sleep induction. It must include all of the following: - At least 60 minutes of EEG recording time. - A minimum of 16 channels of EEG. - Recordings of at least two physiological parameters. 2. EEG with time-locked video recording: This study must include all of the following: - At least 30 minutes of EEG recording time. - A minimum of 16 channels of EEG. - Recordings of at least two physiological parameters. - A time-locked video recording.
When to Use
- Use G541 when performing a 60-minute EEG following a patient's overnight sleep deprivation of at least four hours to capture sleep-related epileptiform discharges.
- Use G541 for EEG studies requiring at least 30 minutes of recording time that include mandatory time-locked video monitoring for seizure semiology analysis.
- Use G541 when a sedative or hypnotic agent is administered specifically to induce sleep during an EEG recording session lasting at least 60 minutes.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G541 when the recording duration is less than 60 minutes for sleep-deprived studies or less than 30 minutes for video-EEG, which triggers an automatic reduction to routine G414/G415 fees.
- Submitting G541 alongside G414, as these codes are mutually exclusive and will result in a rejection for duplicate billing of the same technical service.
- Attempting to bill G541 in conjunction with sleep study codes like J898 or J899, which is strictly prohibited under the Schedule of Benefits.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your technical logs explicitly document the start and end times to verify the 60-minute (sleep-deprived) or 30-minute (video) minimums, as these are primary audit targets.
- Confirm that at least two physiological parameters (e.g., EKG, EOG, or EMG) are recorded and noted in the technical report to satisfy the specific criteria for G541 eligibility.

The physician submitting a claim for the G541 technical component is responsible for the complete quality assurance process for all elements of the service, including data acquisition, reporting, and record keeping. The physician must be able to demonstrate this upon request by the MOH.
The physician maintains documentation that describes the process by which the physician monitors quality assurance in accordance with professional standards.

1. The amount payable for a sleep-deprived/induced EEG, or an EEG with time-locked video recording that does not meet the above requirements will be reduced to that for a routine EEG fees (i.e. G414 and G415/G418). 2. G414 is not eligible for payment with G541. 3. Only one of G415, G418, G543 or G496 are eligible for payment per day. 4. EEG services (i.e. G414, G415, G418, G496, G541, G543, G540, G545, G542, G546, G554, G555, or G544) are not eligible for payment with any overnight or daytime sleep study (i.e. J898, J899, J990, J896, J897, J895, J890, J889, J893 or J894).
