G543Sleep-deprived/induced EEG - professional component

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

A sleep-deprived/induced EEG is an EEG recording (with or without video monitoring) performed after an overnight period of sleep deprivation of greater than 4 hours; or the administration of a sedative/hypnotic agent prior to the EEG recording for the purposes of sleep induction, and must include all of the following: a. at least 60 minutes of EEG recording time; b. a minimum of 16 channels of EEG; and c. recordings of at least two physiological parameters.

When to Use

  • Use G543 when a patient undergoes an EEG following at least 4 hours of documented sleep deprivation to increase the yield of epileptiform discharges.
  • Use G543 when a sedative or hypnotic agent is administered specifically to induce sleep during the EEG procedure to capture sleep-related activity.
  • Use G543 instead of G415 or G418 when the recording duration meets the 60-minute threshold and includes at least two physiological parameters.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G543 when the recording duration is less than 60 minutes, which triggers an automatic payment reduction to the lower-valued G415 or G418 fee.
  • Attempting to bill G543 in conjunction with any sleep study codes (e.g., J898, J899), which will result in a rejection as they are mutually exclusive.
  • Failing to document the specific physiological parameters recorded, which is a mandatory requirement for audit compliance under G543.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure your technical report explicitly states the total recording time and the specific physiological parameters monitored to satisfy the documentation requirements for G543.
  • Verify that no other EEG codes (G415, G418, G496) are submitted for the same patient on the same day, as the Ministry enforces a strict one-per-day limit.
